Sony has taken the success of its predecessor and refined it further with the release of Sony ZV-1 II camera. It comes with 1.0-type Exmor RS CMOS sensor with 20.1 megapixels for still images and 16.8 megapixels for videos. The camera has an 18-50mm equivalent F1.8-4.0 lens. With a focus range from approximately 5 cm to infinity, it works perfectly for close-up shots and wide-angle scenes. The built-in ND filter (1/8 ND) maintains control over exposure in bright conditions.
Ergonomics and Handling
The Sony ZV-1 II is designed with portability and videographers ease of use. Its super compact and lightweight due to just 292g weight and measuring 106mm at its longest side. The battery and SD card compartment is located on the bottom of the camera, protected by a spring-loaded locking hinged door. On the side, you’ll find ports covered by hard plastic flaps that click into place. Most of the buttons are quite small with good physical feedback with a satisfying click. The shutter and video record buttons are larger and easily accessible.
To switch between shooting modes, you’ll use the mode selection button on the top plate. This toggles between three main modes:

Sony ZV-1 II Video Quality
The ZV-1 II can record 4K video at up to 30fps and Full HD up to 120fps frame rate. It uses digital stabilization for video that crops the frame and uses a moving frame within the cropped region to correct for motion. This works well for 4K video, turning the 18mm equivalent lens into about a 24mm equivalent. The stabilization quality varies depending on movement type and direction, performing better with slower, steadier movements.
Color Profiles and Grading
The camera offers HLG modes for HDR displays and S-Log2 and S-Log3 profiles for color grading. However, it’s important to note that the ZV-1 II only captures 8-bit color depth, which can limit your grading flexibility, especially with S-Log3. For better results, you might want to stick with S-Log2 when using these profiles.
CineVlog Mode
A new feature in the ZV-1 II is the CineVlog mode that automatically sets a cinematic 2.35:1 aspect ratio, 24p frame rate, and a film-like color profile. This mode apply color filters and adjust focus speed for a more cinematic look. You can fine-tune your footage using “Moods” (color response) and “Looks” (tonal response and contrast) filters.
Audio Quality
The Sony ZV-1 II has a built-in directional 3-capsule microphone that can record audio from the front, back, or all around. You can choose between auto and manual settings, depending on your preferences and shooting conditions. In auto mode, the camera’s performance varies depending on the environment. You’ll find it works best in quiet outdoor spaces, where it can effectively isolate your voice from ambient noise. Sony provides a windscreen that you can attach to lower wind noise when shooting outdoors. The ZV-1 II supports external microphones. You can connect various Sony microphones, such as the ECM-G1.
Sony ZV-1 II Image Quality
The new 18-50mm equivalent F1.8-4.0 lens performs great. When it comes to color reproduction, the camera’s can capture accurate colors and skin tones. The standard profile produces pleasing greens and yellows without being overly punchy. It takes sharper photos compared to its predecessor when shooting at 18mm with an f/2 aperture. When it comes to low-light performance, the ZV-1 II’s RAW noise handling is good. While noise is more noticeable compared to larger-sensor cameras, it performs well relative to other compact cameras in its class.
Storage
The Sony ZV-1 II is compatible with various memory card types. You’ll find support for both SD memory cards and Memory Stick media to store your high-quality footage and images. For SD cards, you can use SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards. The camera is also compatible with Memory Stick PRO Duo and Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo media. If you’re using microSD cards or Memory Stick Micro media, make sure to use the appropriate adapter to ensure compatibility with the camera’s slot.
Connectivity
The Sony ZV-1 II works with the Creators’ App to creat connection between your camera and smartphone. This app allows you to:

Sony ZV-1 II Battery Life
The Sony ZV-1 II uses the same 4.5Wh NP-BX1 battery as the ZV-1 camera. The battery life is rated at 290 still frames per charge according to CIPA standards. When it comes to video recording, the official CIPA rating for “Actual” video recording time is 45 minutes. To help you manage power more effectively, Sony has introduced a USB-C port on the ZV-1 II.
